Declaration of War
The following two newspaper articles show the United States entering the Spanish American War after Congress unanimously approved the resolution. This would be the first formal declaration of war by Congress since the Mexican-American War. It is also apparent that the United States Navy was appropriated funds to prepare for the war effort and the individual states were called upon to fulfill a volunteer requirement for the Volunteer Army. Interestingly, one of the headlines also points to Theodore Roosevelt, who was the Assistant Secretary of the Navy at the time. It details his resignation and decision to become a Lieutenant Colonel in a 'Cowboy Regiment'. This is one early account of Roosevelt's military transition and is prelude to his famous raid upon San Juan Hill.
