The Spanish Forces
The newspapers were able to acquire and relay information about the size and strength of the Spanish forces in Cuba. It is stated that the Spanish sent 130,000 of its regular soldiers to the island and according to the author, they are poor marksmen. There are also specified concerns of the United States that the Spanish may send some of its forces to the southern coastlines in areas such as South Carolina. While this would have been a bold military move by Spain, the likelihood it would have reached a positive outcome would have been hard to fathom, especially considering the results of the fighting in Cuba.
